3 Big Reasons Why You Need Breathing Room

3 Reasons You Need Breathing Room

Yesterday, I decided to take a shower, get dressed and leave the house for the first time in 3 days. (Yes, I’ve been in quite a funk this week. Welcome to my world!)

I’ve been fighting a yucky cold since last Friday, but we decided I was germ-free enough to attend the mid-week service without contaminating anyone. Yay!

Getting to church on a Wednesday night seems to be an epic battle lately. But this week, we braved through all the opposition and pushed past snot and phlegm to get there.

As I stood in the sanctuary with my left-hand firmly in Bruce’s grasp, my soul soared as we sang God’s praises. I remembered God is bigger than bad days, and I found a little breathing room for my soul. My right arm lifted up high in worship, and I almost touched heaven. (Or maybe heaven came down and kissed me.).

Every minute I set aside to sit at His feet creates space for me to grow in wisdom and helps me rise above the crazy opposition in my life.

I still don’t understand why my confusing circumstances haven’t changed, but I see Him more clearly. Connecting with His presence comforts my weary soul.

More Jesus in me makes a difference and helps me keep moving forward.

How is your week going, friend? Are you feeling frazzled and kind of in an funk like me?  Life is so crazy busy sometimes. I know how hard it is to slow down and sit at His feet.

I’m determined to keep fighting for that quiet space in my day — the silent moments where I can lift my heart to my God and listen for His voice.

Yes, we are busy and have much to do, but if we don’t make time to “be still and know He is God,” we will end up missing what is most important.

3 Reasons Why You Need Breathing Room

To foster rest for the body

We are constantly running on adrenaline from one emergency to the next. Breathing room with Jesus reminds us we can’t do it all, and we were never supposed to control the universe. Our bodies need to spend time in the slow lane, and a nap is good for your soul. “Doing nothing” is a restoration project we need to invest in more regularly.

“God strengthens the weary and gives vitality to those worn down by age and care. Young people will get tired; strapping young men will stumble and fall. But those who trust in the Eternal One will regain their strength. They will soar on wings as eagles. They will run—never winded, never weary. They will walk—never tired, never faint.” (Isaiah 40:29-31, VOICE)

to formulate clarity in your mind

Our minds are clogged with noise, and we are mentally exhausted. Unplugging from all that buzzes and dings and sitting in silence before your Savior will recalibrate your very tired brain. Quiet will clear the clutter. Let Jesus breathe fresh wind into your thinking as you listen for His voice.

“You will guard him and keep him in perfect and constant peace whose mind –both its inclination and its character — is stayed on You, because he commits himself to You, leans on You, and hopes confidently in You.” (Isaiah 26:3, AMPC)

To find peace in our soul and spirit

When we give away all our emotional energy to others, we end up exhausted. Your God never saps you of strength — solo time spent with Him always strengthens your spirit (even if you end up napping!). Quiet time is oxygen for your soul.

“The Lord is my best friend and my shepherd. I always have more than enough. He offers a resting place for me in his luxurious love. His tracks take me to an oasis of peace, the quiet brook of bliss. That’s where he restores and revives my life. He opens before me pathways to God’s pleasure and leads me along in his footsteps of righteousness so that I can bring honor to his name.” (Psalm 23:1-3, TPT)

One of the best ways to create breathing room is to breathe out your prayers. As you exhale your cares to God, you will inhale His grace and peace. You can join me on Instagram this month for a 31-Day Pray Big Challenge. I’ll share a prayer each day in Stories. (If you missed a day, you can watch all the replays because they are saved in the highlights on my profile page.

I’m also sharing a copy of My Pray Big Prayer Calendar with you. Join the Wildfire Faith Community and  grab a copy in our Faith Fuel Library. Print out your copy and start each morning inviting God to strengthen your step and breathe fresh wind into your weary spirit.

Life is sweeter when we slow down and sit in silence before our Savior. He breathes life into us, and we are empowered to love others with His supernatural strength.

Sit in silence with your Savior when you need breathing room.

    1. I fight it — like a bratty 5 year old — but then when I finally do allow quiet in, I remember how important it is for my well being.

  1. Thanks Lyli for the reminder to remember to breathe in His presence and refreshment for our soul. I do a breathing exercise often when praying to sync in the visual! Happy to link up!

    1. I love that, Jill. I think focusing on our breathing helps calm us down and prepare us for the quiet space we need to step into to really connect with God through prayer.

  2. This is so refreshing! Such a good reminder to quiet ourselves. I like the Bible verse translations you chose too – they stood out to me in a new way.

  3. So sorry to read about your cold. Hope you are feeling better now. Glad you were able to attend Wednesday services. Our church has a dinner each Wednesday in Lent before the services, which I think is a great opportunity for fellowship!
