4 Things Fueling My Faith Right Now

4 Things Fueling My Faith Right Now

Sometimes you just need to take a nap. Now that our grandson is living with us, we have learned to love sneaking some time under the covers in the middle of the day. Those Spaniards who relish the siesta really know the secret. Taking a mid-day nap makes a huge difference. Fueling your faith starts with repairing your frazzled soul.

Here’s the thing that makes no sense to me, but is really a proven fact: When life is crazy busy, and I am overwhelmed, the best thing I can do is to push the pause button and slow down.

It’s not my instinct to do less, but when I slow down, I never regret it. The important thing is to not just sit in front of the television all day mindlessly becoming a coach potato and eating junk food. That doesn’t help.

I can refuel my empty soul and reignite my faith if I fill up my free time with life-giving enjoyment.

How about you? Are you running on empty and forgetting to take care of yourself? Maybe you are so busy taking care of everyone else that you’ve forgotten to put on the oxygen mask first.

This past week, God reminded me of a few simple steps I can take to fuel my faith, and I thought I’d share them in case you are lacking inspiration and need a little spark to get you started.

Sacred Rest

I’ve slowly been reading through Dr. Saundra Dalton Smith’s life-changing book Sacred Rest. Learning about the 7 types of rest she unpacks in her book has helped me make significant changes in my life so that I can renew my energy and restore my sanity during a crazy season. I’m learning I need to carve out time out to rest even in the midst of this very crazy busy season. Without rest, I will simply not thrive.

Song

Yesterday, I was driving home from a doctor’s appointment with the radio on, and Moriah Peters reminded me that I don’t need to know what is next because God is with me every step. I was smiling and singing along one minute, and then I cried the ugly cry. I don’t know what’s next, but I can look back and see ten thousand reasons to trust He is working all things for good. Sometimes you have to sing the words and keep taking steps forward before y0u know how God is going to part the waters and make a way through the dark sea of discouragement. I’m sharing my Spotify playlist with you to help you raise a hallelujah wherever you are standing today:

I’ve been hunkered down at home trying to put out fires for months, but this past week my friends lured me out of hiding and showered me with birthday love (My actual birthday was last month, but it’s never too late to celebrate!). When you make room to listen to your friends, you realize you are not alone in the struggle. I came home so encouraged, and I”ve decided I need to set aside time for more coffee dates to renew my soul. (Note: I actually don’t drink coffee. I am a fan of a good cup of tea instead. I hope we can still be friends!).

Scripture

Recently, I pulled my copy of Daily Light on the Daily Path off the bookshelf and put it on my nightstand. Every morning, when the alarm rings, I remind myself “Word before world,” and I pick up that sweet book and read the daily reading — which is basically just a collection of Scriptures centered on the same theme. Yesterday, I opened up the morning reading and started my day with Job 23:10: “But He knows the way that I take; when he has tried me, I shall come out as gold.

  1. Great ideas! I LOVE Daily Light on the Daily Path and have been reading it for years, since I first saw it mentioned in missionary biographies. I love that it is all Scripture.

Several years ago, I had an illness that took months of recovery. I literally could not go without periods of rest–my body just would not let me. But I learned the value of rest through that and how it is needed for our minds and bodies to function best.

I think that, too, after time out with a friend. Sometimes I sort-of resent an “obligation” on the calendar when I am preparing, but afterwards I’m so glad I went and realize I need to do it more.

    1. I think we can “over stuff” our calendar with good things, and then it’s not very life giving. So, it’s important to cultivate that calendar to leave room for rest at home.

  2. Sipping my morning tea even as I’m reading here—and also aware that I need to make room in my life for more coffee dates. Who cares what’s in the cups? It’s what’s in the conversation that makes them so rejuvenating!

    1. Yes!!!! It’s amazing how conversation with a like-minded sister can really refill your cup. I am so thankful for my friends — and thankful for you, Michele. Thanks for joining me here every Friday and being such a cheerleader friend.

  3. Music can be so powerful to change the atmosphere around me and soften my heart. Sometimes I get so caught up in getting things done, I forget. Then I am struggling, turn music on and my spirit changes. So grateful for the ways God works!

    1. Yes, I agree. I have music on at the house all the time now because we are in a season of spiritual warfare here. It fils me with hope on hard days.

  4. Lyli, when we relocated from our home of 30 years we left a strong church family – and we miss them terribly. We have NEVER connected like that here. So, now we are considering relocating again and I am hoping we will find a good strong church body. It seems hopeful. So, for me – refueling would be getting connected again. Good post. (always).

    1. Friend, I can so relate to your story. I experienced this when I moved from one ministry job to another a while back. My first job was “family,” and I realize now what a special gift from God those folks were to me in my 20’s and 30’s. as a single gal.

  5. This is so good, Lyli! This week I realized–when my family said, “You seem tense…”–that I needed to make changes on my 6:00 am tutoring days. When you start work (online tutoring) at 6:00 am, you are frazzled by 4:00 pm!!! So I realized on those days, I absolutely must carve out 30 or 40 minutes to read/rest/nap. Yesterday I forced myself to stop and 2 and do that. Then I was able to resume work at 3 and have another productive 2 hours. (as opposed to working with glazed eyes all afternoon…)

And yes to coffee dates! I’ve realized that too!

    1. This week, I had a morning appointment across town, and when it was over, I decided to grab lunch. I had a book tucked into my purse, and my journal. It was so nice, and I came home super relaxed after just 30 minutes of “quiet me time.” 🙂
