An Epic Victory

An Epic Victory

Years ago, I purchased a novel at a local bookstore that was an epic three-part story. I wasn’t sure if I’d like the narrative, so I only invested in the first volume of the trilogy. When I got home, I sat down on the couch, poured myself a cup of tea, and got lost in the drama. The conflict was fierce, and I had no idea how the tangled plot twists could possibly turn around and result in a favorable outcome.

When I reached the last page of the book, I was fully invested. The cliffhanger ending left me hungry for more – because just one part of a story is never fully satisfying. I could hardly wait to read the rest.

The exciting story in Micah 5 reminds me of that same trilogy. Micah describes an epic battle where a new ruler rises up from obscurity. This hero saves the people of Israel who were surrounded by the adversary’s military forces. But that’s only the first section of the story.

If you stop reading at part one, you miss the even grander narrative that follows. Our Savior was born in Bethlehem to rescue us from the clutches of the enemy of our soul. And, an even grander victory is still coming at the end of the ages when Christ returns to reign forever and wipes out the foe once and for all.

Maybe right now, you are really dissatisfied about the current page of your narrative. Perhaps you are in the middle of a tumultuous conflict, and you are worried about what’s next. You can trust God with your story. He has promised us a spectacular ending.

While we wait for our epic victory to come, Micah reminds us to keep reading and to keep looking to Jesus…

  1. I love remembering that my own small story fits into a narrative arc that spans generations of grace. And I”m trusting for a continuation of the story long after I’m gone!

  2. I think of those folks in Hebrews 11, who died without receiving the visible answer to their prayers. Yet even that was not the end of the story – God was still working. Praise the Lord, it’s not over until He says so, and until then, His mercies are new every morning.

  3. Love this, Lyli. Especially your words that we can trust God with our story b/c his ending is spectacular. We may not see that here, but we are guaranteed that for eternity! And that is great hope.

  4. It’s all too easy to get frustrated and angry when my story isn’t going the way I think it should. Yielding and surrendering and trusting God with what He is writing is something I am continually learning to do.
