What Are You Wearing?

The other day I needed a new dress.
I crossed my fingers and reached far back into dark hole section of the closet in search of an unworn dress that I faintly remembered.
It was one of two dresses I’d brought home for my husband’s approval on the weekend before Mike and Sherree got married in 2010. He’d picked the other dress, and this black and white number faded into oblivion.
Rescuing the garment from the shadows, I held up the dress for inspection. It still had the tag on it.
“Come with me, little dress.” I pulled it over my head, and it landed nicely in all the right places. I added a pretty black and white heart necklace to match. I glanced in the mirror on the way out of the bedroom and smiled. This dress and I are going to be friends.
At work, I was the fashion diva of the day. “Nice dress.”
Score!
When I got home, my husband gave me “the look.” You know, the look that says, “You are hot.”
“You know,” he said. “I didn’t pick that dress because I thought you’d look like a zebra. It looked different on the hanger, but now that I see it on…” Apparently, zebras are in season.
I donned the zebra dress again today. As I pondered its magical powers, God gently spoke to me about the dark hole in the closet of my heart where I place things I don’t want to wear.
What else have you not put on because you think it won’t look good on you, Lyli?
Sometimes, you don’t know how good something fits until you take a chance and wear it.
Such a great reminder to look through the lens of His light rather than the dimmed view our assumptions tend to schew. 🙂 Great words today, Lyli! I needed that.
Bless you!
Dawn
Thank you for hosting! 🙂 Blessings hun!
So love (pun intended) that we both wrote about love. God is showing me I need to love more than I currently am. I am to love in ways which will put me out of my comfort zone too. As an aside, I have always found zebras amazing. To think that our God took the time to detail those stripes & none of them are the same, astounds me. Thank you, Lyli, for this post & for sharing it with us all. Have a great Thurs.!
Again, you hit me where I needed it most today! Thank you, Lyli, and keep them coming!
Hmmm, that’s really something to think about! Thanks for hosting Thought-Provoking Thursday.
What we wear is such an important part of shining our light. I realize what you write is a metaphor but I do believe how we dress can be an expression of love. My daughter graduated Grade 8 last night and she was one of the few dressed modestly. Several teachers made a point of commenting on how “classy” and sweet she looked. What we wear makes a difference and does shine light in a dark world.
I like this, Lyli! I have a black dress in my closet with the tag still on it that I need to get out and wear too. Maybe on vacation. 🙂 But what else am I not putting on in my spiritual wardrobe? Good question to consider.
Love this:
“Sometimes, you don’t know how good something fits until you take a chance and wear it.”
I honestly was shocked when I realized how nice that dress looked on. It’s such a reminder to me to not make assumptions.
Great thought about what God says I need to wear. I think, like in real life, I wear over and over and over the things that are easy and comfortable. The things that take more effort, I tend to ignore. Thanks for the necessary wake up call.
I love this, Lyli. You have hit a spot inside of my closet where some things are hanging and need to either be brought out to wear of weeded out and away.
By the way, I love this line: “Apparently, zebras are in season.” : )
You also write very well, young lady!
Caring through Christ, ~ linda
A thought provoking thought for this Thursday for sure. I’ll be thinking about our dresses from God–making sure they are front and foremost in the closet of my heart. ~Pamela
Just love this post and what a great lesson – and great dress. Loved that it did its magic. knew just how you were feeling. One post I will be remembering.
May we be clothed in His righteousness! Thanks for the lovely post & for hosting & God bless!
I love your thought-provoking Thursday posts. Loved this one. Much love, friend. xoxo
You have a gift, Lyli! – To provoke our thoughts toward spiritual things and heavenly places. I have a pair of zebra earrings given to me by an NA missionary whom we support. I’ve never worn them. But I think I will set them where I can see them – to remind me to *think* about *what* I’m wearing, what I’m *putting on* each morning. Blessings to you.
Hi Lyli, What a great post. When we wear love, a cute dress is just an added bonus. Please come over and share this at Counting My Blessings Link-up today. I know my readers will love it!
Oh, Lyli – I loved this post! Such a great thought – hitting home. Unfortunately, I have far too many things in my “closet” that I’ve worn and tucked away. Ill fitting – not falling about all the right places as you graphically put it. That’s what comes of too many thrift store bargains rather than the ONE quality piece that goes everywhere. I need more of those in my closet so I’m not all over the place with bits of this and that that are not quite the deal.
Yes – totally thought provoking, my dear.
Joy!
Kathy
Zebras are so beautiful close up. I never realized until I saw your photo.
I’m glad you reached into the back of your closest. I’m like that. I’ll buy something I like but it doesn’t work for what I bought it for – maybe the top I had in mind just doesn’t work with the skirt I bought, so it goes in the back of the closet. However, at the right time, it comes out and fits beautifully in with my life. Sometimes it’s all about His timing!
So glad you were the fashion diva for the day!
What a sweet post! Loved it!
Oh this is so good. I love how The Message brings this scripture to life. Definitely words to ponder!
I just loved how Peterson worded these verses. He always grabs my attention.
