Trembling Trust
I sat in the sanctuary trembling.
The man standing at the pulpit reading the Word was not my pastor. My pastor had fallen into sin, and now all around me people wept. As a church family, we collectively lifted our broken hearts to our holy God and held fast to His unchanging promises on a day when the enemy tried to undo us.
Man may fail me, but God is faithful.
When we do not fear God, we open up our lives to destruction. Fear of man is wrong, but it is healthy to tremble in the presence of a holy God.
To fear God means to
seek His wisdom because we acknowledge our own foolishness apart from His Truth
“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” (Proverbs 9:10, ESV).
exalt Him with a humble heart in awe of His goodness and glory
“The fear of the LORD is instruction in wisdom, and humility comes before honor.” (Proverbs 15:33)
follow His commands wholeheartedly out of a sincere desire to please Him above all else
“Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD. What man is there who desires life and loves many days, that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit. Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.” (Psalm 34:11-14)
When we choose to fear God, we…

Liz,
I am happy to report that we are 4 years past that sad day, and God has birthed beautiful things out of the ashes of that sad day.
We have gone through difficulties within the church and church hurt is hard! Church people are not immune to sin. We are all fallible. There was only one perfect man, Jesus!
I love this line in your post, “Man may fail, but God is faithful!!” He is so faithful and loves us so much!
Our God is Holy and righteous and just, and we would all be better off with a healthy dose of fear and trembling before our Lord!
Great post! Blessings, Misty
Misty,
Experiencing this heartbreak was a big wake-up call for me regarding the importance of not letting myself make excuses for my own compromise. Sin is destructive, and small indiscretions lead to large devastation.
Lyli, this post has so much wisdom for us all. “Be not wise in your own eyes.” We are in need of wisdom from God every day in increasing measure. May we trust and rely on wisdom from above more than any wisdom found in ourselves or others. Wonderful word this morning! xo
Yes, my friend. I need Him to help me recalibrate my fallen thinking.
Lyli we’ve been there too trembling and crying for our pastor and church.
Thanks for sharing.
HUGS, Debbie
Not a club I wanted to join. 🙁
That’s hard. We had an experience like that with a missionary and friend we had supported. That shook me for a long time, but redirected my trust to the Lord. People fail, but He never will.
Sadly, Barbara, after years in ministry, I must say I have experienced this more than once. We are so broken and in need of a Savior.
More than anything, this is just a reminder to me that I am not above sin. I need Him desperately every day.
Ugh, my heart aches for you and your church family. Thanks for mining the wisdom you gained from a heartbreaking experience.
Thank you, Michele. It’s been 4 years, and I must tell you that our church is thriving. God raised up godly men to lead us and support us through that season.
God has a way of reminding us time and time again that we have all sinned and fallen short of His glory and that no one but Him can be who we place our faith and trust in. What you went through is a horribly painful thing. I’ve been told that our character is revealed by how we deal with another person’s sin and I think that’s probably a true statement and that the character of a church is revealed by how they go through something like this.
