When You Need to Stay with It and Survive
I am struggling to stay with it during this scary season. I want my theme song to be “I Will Survive,” but the only song that currently comes to mind is “It’s the End of the World as We Know It.”
And, just like the song says: I feel fine.
Yeah, right. Who am I kidding? Not really. I am most definitely not fine.
I am frustrated.
I am feeling stuck.
I am fearful of the future.
I am definitely not fine.
I keep telling myself that God is faithful. He has always gotten me through, and He has never failed me.
And then I go grab an Oreo and pray God will help me stick it out.
How about you, friend? How was your week? Are you feeling holed up and isolated? Do you desperately want to break free from this crazy COVID pandemic?
Yeah, me too.
Yesterday, God reminded me that Jesus walked a lonely road to die on a cross, and then He spent a season in the grave. But God brought great redemption out of that time. I have to trust that the God who brings dead things back to life will bring something beautiful after this is all over and done. His redemption is at work even in this.
I am so thankful that Easter provides us an opportunity to start again afresh. With renewed hope and confidence, we can choose to live in light of His resurrection and claim His victory as our own. Yes, even now.
As I was digging into the Word this week, I was overjoyed to discover that God gave me some practical strategies to help us fuel our faith and persevere during this season of suffering. I hope that these Scriptural nuggets of truth will encourage your heart as much as mine.
How to Stay With It and Survive
Draw near to God
Daily visit the foot of the cross in your heart and allow Him to cleanse your heart on unbelief. (v. 22)
- “…let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water.” (Hebrews 10:22, CSB)
Hold unswervingly to hope
The only safe haven on this earth is found sitting at the feet of Christ, our faithful Savior.
- “Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep His promise.” (Hebrews 10:23, NLT)
Link arms with uphill people to love deep and help big.
We are called to be “Jesus with skin on” and encourage one another on days when this world hits us hard.
- “Discover creative ways to encourage others and to motivate them toward acts of compassion, doing beautiful works as expressions of love.” (Hebrews 10:24, TPT)

The crucified life is not for cowards. Let’s arm themselves with courage from the Word and walk forward together in the power of the Holy Spirit:
…You need to stick it out, staying with God’s plan so you’ll be there for the promised completion. It won’t be long now, He’s on the way; He’ll show up most any minute. But anyone who is right with Me thrives on loyal trust; if he cuts and runs, I won’t be very happy. But we’re not quitters who lose out. Oh, no! We’ll stay with it and survive, trusting all the way.
~Hebrews 10:35-39, MSG
For me there was one kind of strain when this all started, and there’s a different kind of strain as it’s prolonged. I keep feeding my soul with God’s truth and taking my thoughts captive. But, yes, I am more than ready for this to me done.
I agree, Barbara. Like grief, it comes in waves full of different emotions. Easter week was definitely a good week for me — I unplugged quite a bit from all the media noise, and that made a huge difference. And my small group started meeting on Zoom. That fellowship really helped as well.
I am definitely of the grab an oreo variety. Thanks for the encouragement.
I really. need to break up with Oreos as a comfort food. Bruce brought them home for me, and I ate every single one.
A blessed Easter to you and yours in this crazy season we’re in!
Hugs and prayers, friend.
