How to Speak Life on Social Media

How to Speak Life on Social Media

Every few months, I am tempted to delete all my social media accounts. The negative energy overwhelms me. Facebook starts to suck my joy away – it is such a time waster. I grow tired of scrolling through superficial Instagram selfies and beat myself up for not having a Pinterest perfect life. Social media can be a breeding ground for dissatisfaction. People inappropriately “overshare” intimate details of their personal lives, and brutal wars are waged by friends with differing political ideologies. I want to return to the quiet days of reading a book and listening to music. Why can’t we just all get along?

But, before I hit the delete button on my social media life, God usually sends me a reminder. He whispers quietly to my heart, “My daughter, you are called to be a light in a dark place.”

Those broken people on social media are hurting, and I have a sure hope in Jesus to share with them. I can use my facebook feed to connect with people who have serious questions about life and faith. I can communicate foundational truths from Scripture and offer hope and healing to a lost soul.

Now instead of wasting time on social media, I log on purposefully to speak life.

Friends, Jesus is the Word made flesh. His mighty name is life and peace even on Facebook. He speaks and the storm of negative words in our newsfeeds must obey. The Lord wants to bring redemption through us on social media.

Let’s pause and pray before we post so that we use our words wisely…

  1. Great post Lyli! I’m only on Pinterest but I praise God that He has called you to be a light on other social media platforms.
I agree we need to be in constant prayer before we write our posts both on our blogs…& for those who have social media accounts.
    Bless you,
    Jennifer

  2. I love this reminder because I, too, get overwhelmed with and discouraged by social media. I am often tempted to chime in, but that verse on the graphic reminds me not to!

Thank you for reminding me that we are missionaries for Jesus everywhere we are — even social media.

  3. I share your concern about social media. We are sort of “required” to engage there, but it’s hard to strike a balance between being an influencer and being influenced in ways we don’t intend.
One practice that works for me is just to limit the scrolling. I check notifications, scroll down to the end of my “see first” posts, and then move on to something productive. There’s not much to be gained from mindless scrolling.

  4. Hi Lyli,
My circle of influence may be small, but I can make a difference one positive comment, Bible verse, or prayer at a time. Thanks for the encouraging post that remind me to keep pressing on.

    Peace and grace,
    Tammy

  5. Just last night I made the mistake of looking at social media right before bed and saw something pretty hurtful by someone I care about. Why people have to use social media for their passive aggressive digs is beyond me!
