What else are you mad about?

We sat knee to knee and stared into each other’s baby blues while we held hands. Our marriage coach hovered near by as we engaged in an activity titled “Taking Out the Trash.”

I took a deep breath and rattled off my list of offenses.

What else are you mad about?

I dug deeper and spoke from the deep dark pit in my stomach where bitter things fester. Bruce handed me a piece of tissue as the tears started to freely fall.

What else are you mad about?

The coach told him to keep asking the same question until I ran out of things to say.

I had plenty to say.

I’m angry that our baby died.

There. I said it. I am mad that I am not a mom. That’s as trashy as it gets.

I handed Bruce a box of tissue. Maybe I shouldn’t have signed us up for a marriage conference on the same weekend when Facebook reminds me I had a miscarriage.

I spent 20 minutes in a conference hall regurgitating all of my disappointments. Honestly, I wish I’d just stayed home in my PJ’s instead. Dealing with your brokenness is exhausting.

Life is incredibly painful sometimes.

Over the last few weeks, I’ve heard from many of you — the beautifully broken people who read this blog. I’ve cried over emails, and I’ve prayed for you to know God is fighting for you. You’ve got trash, too.

You are mad because of the chaos in your homes.

You are sad because people are hurtful and misjudge your motives.

You are scared nothing will ever change, and you’ll end up empty handed with unanswered prayers.

You wish you could change your circumstances and find hope in the midst of your pain. If only life were different…

Friend, I want to remind you of what God whispered to me when I got home from the conference and picked up my Bible:

You are secure in Christ. No weapon formed against you shall prosper.  The suffering you experiencing today is but a shadow, and God’s redemption is at work. (I John 5:13 & 18Isaiah 54:17, Colossians 1:13-14 & 27).

The enemy wants you to spend all your time wallowing the mire, but God has rescued you from the pit and given you a firm place to stand. (Psalm 40:2)

Stinky sentiment can’t smell up your house if you don’t stuff it. I want to open up my home to the sweet aroma of the Spirit and take out the trash.  So instead of inhaling the stench of brokenness and sin, I’ve decided to freshen up my home and heart by praying big for my family for the next 7 days.  Want to join me?

7 Scriptural Prayers to Secure Your Home:

Lord, do a beautiful work in us and build a solid foundation of wisdom.

β€œBy wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; through knowledge its rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.” (Proverbs 24:3-4)

Lord, help us cover one another with Your love even when it’s hard.

β€œAbove all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” (I Peter 4:8)

Lord, teach us to protect one another and persevere with hope.

β€œLove is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.” (I Corinthians 13:4-8)

Lord, firmly establish our family in faith and guard us against the enemy.

β€œThe Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.” (II Thessalonians 3:3)

Lord, strengthen our hearts and provide us with abundant peace.

β€œExtol the LORD, Jerusalem; praise your God, Zion. He strengthens the bars of your gates and blesses your people within you. He grants peace to your borders and satisfies you with the finest of wheat.” (Psalm 147:12-14)

Lord, may Your Truth infuse our lives so that nothing keeps us from walking in full freedom.

β€œThen you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32)

Lord, give us discernment during difficult times and draw us closer to you each day.

β€œTherefore let all the faithful pray to you while you may be found; surely the rising of the mighty waters will not reach them. You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you.” (Psalm 32:6-8)

  1. I’m so grateful that even though life can be painful, I’m secure in Christ. Such hope in the knowledge that NO weapons prosper against me!!

  2. Lyli, I’m so sorry you’ve faced miscarriage. Oh, the loss… But praise God you’ve run to Him. And now you’re taking us there, too, allowing God to use this situation, hard as it be, for His glory. It has been a week of deep soul-searching here as well. Tears, prayers, an attitude of worship. Call the moments hard – but oh so freeing and well worth it I LOVE the prayers and scriptures you’ve offered and how you’re grabbing warriors to come alongside, to sit at His throne – our true help. Praise God. xo.

    1. Praying for you, friend.

And, in case you were wondering, I started this blog as a result of my miscarriage. I don’t write about that on here often, but this blog was the baby God gave me to raise up. πŸ™‚

  3. Lyli, you’re scaring me, friend. Because Jose and I are signed up to go on a marriage retreat in March. πŸ™‚ But thanks for sharing your struggles. We can all relate. And thanks for these 7 prayers. Such good solid truth here.

    1. And I didn’t say in my first comment, but I’m so sorry to read you had a miscarriage. A dear friend of mine also mourns children she hasn’t had. So sorry, friend. Hugs to you.

      1. Love you, Betsy! I am sure you will have a wonderful time at your marriage conference. This conference was different from any other one I’d ever been to. I think we left with some good communication tools for navigating difficult emotions, so I am thankful… but boy, was it emotionally exhausting.

Praying for your friend, today. May God surround her with His comfort. It comforts me to realize that the first face Baby Dunbar every saw was the Lord’s. He will show us all the sweet spots when we get to heaven.

  4. And I didn’t say in my first comment, but I’m so sorry to read you had a miscarriage. A dear friend of mine also mourns children she hasn’t had. So sorry, friend. Hugs to you.

  5. Lyli, I’m so sorry. Thank you for sharing the sad, ugly, and dark, because then I know better how to pray. And truly, words that are spoken from that deep place of suffering are the ones that stick and help in healing the hearts of others.
    Blessings to you.

    1. I love praying through that Psalm as well, friend. I had a former student who was shipped off to war a few years back, and his mama asked us to pray that Psalm over her son every day. I thought, “That’s one wise mama.” πŸ™‚

  6. Lyli, thank you for sharing about your loss and allowing God’s light and love to shine through that darkness by encouraging others with His truth. May He continue to heal your heart.

  7. I had some thoughts pop into my head after reading this. I know it appears He is making us dredge up all the things we’ve been through, not to hurt us but to heal us. If we can face it in the light of His love, His Spirit pours over old wounds, including grief. I dealt with my own. And about houses, we are spiritual houses ourselves and He had reminded me about speaking peace to the house we enter or people we see. If it is not returned, we can shake off that dust, The Bible says the devil eats dust, or dead things. We need to do our best to live in peace with each other and in our families, and as believers. It’ like I am always dusting something in the natural house, now I pay attention to spiritual ones. Let’s get rid of what hinders our healing and robs us of His peace. Love and blessings.

  8. Dear Lyli … what an important post, this reminder to keep God’s Word front and center in our homes, especially during the days of crisis, crazyness, and everything else that’s assailing us.

Claiming His Words and repeating them often are keeping my boat afloat.

  9. Lyli, the sorrow never leaves completely when we lose a child-even one we didn’t get to know. Praying God comforts you when the grief comes. And while others may expect you to move on and get over it, God will sit with you and grieve with you, “You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.” Psalm 56:8.

Thank you for these prayers. I’ll add it to my #31daysofprayerforyourhome.

  10. Lyli, I am so sorry for your loss. I bet it hurts. I love the 7 powerful prayers. Now, if only I can find my password for the library. Haha. I think I know where I put it. Thank you for sharing your heart.

  11. My partner and I stumbled over here different web address and thought I might as well check things out.
