5 Remedies for Broken Hearts

For seven years, I dragged myself out of bed every morning and made myself go to work. The shards of my lacerated heart pierced my mind and darkness flooded every corner. I struggled to just breathe.
On the back wall of my classroom, the words of the psalmist spoke of healing in a position visible to me at all times. He heals the brokenhearted. Hour after hour, I stood at the front of the room and silently rehearsed that truth.
He heals.
I reached out for His healing like a desperate woman burdened with a bandage soaked in blood.
With empty hands, I picked up the Word of Life. He slowly mended me stitch by stitch as I scoured its pages. Truth was the only remedy.
Once resurrected, I danced in white with heart beating wild and never looked back.
I thought I’d run wild and free forever, but since then my heart has been pummeled and patched up over and over again.
My tattered heart longs for heaven.
I live in the midst of the fallen ruins, but this world is not my home anyway.
Daily, I must surrender my broken heart to the One who creates beauty out of the ashes.
5 Remedies for Broken Hearts
- Focus on breathing: You need to slow down to avoid going into shock. Be still before Him. (Psalms 37:1-9)
- Wash your wound in the Word: Nothing else will stop the bleeding. Keep pouring the truth on your pain until the poison is washed away. (Psalm 119:9-11)
- Apply the salve of forgiveness: Spread His grace over your mess, rather than holding on to your hurt. It takes the sting out every time. (Colossians 3:1-13)
- Elevate above the pain center: Lift your hands and heart in worship. As you look up, your pain will begin to dissipate. (Psalm 107:19-22)
- Stay alert for signs of infection: Bitterness is a cancer. Uproot it before it takes hold of your heart. (Ephesians 4:25-32)
God can heal a broken heart, but you have to give Him all the pieces.
Hi Lyli, I have battled the last 8ish years with this kind of broken heartedness and the point you made is so true, and has been my saving grace… “Wash your wound in the Word”. For me this has been my healing and my anchor. God’s word!!! Every time!!
Great post,
God bless
Tracy
I was taken aback when I read the title of your post — my link is also about heart break, only of a different sort. Thanks be to the God who binds up the broken hearted – our Healer.
Yes, yes … our tattered hearts long for heaven, Lyli. We just too often don’t realize it. And we look in every other place to be made whole.
Doesn’t work, does it …
I was going to pick my favorite of the five, but they are each so important. I’ve been there. Like you one time that crushed me and many lesser times . . . all in need of His healing touch. Thank you Lyli, for this beautiful reminder and for hosting us each week. Blessings!
I needed this message today. Thank you. 🙂
Blessings, Lyli! A perfect list for healing of broken hearts. These are lessons I, too, learned, in the fires of . . . well. Lots of burning circumstances in their seasons. The forgiveness lesson was the most riveting! In all my good intentions, I had still been harboring unforgiveness in a situation. It was truly miraculous how the healing came instantly when the Lord showed me and plucked from me that root of bitterness so His forgiveness could flow. Not in my strength–but His. So thankful for his nest of healing in all these things.
Joy!
Kathy
Focusing on one breath at a time truly is good advice, Lyli. It can get us through many hard situations. Thank you for sharing all these tips—good stuff!
Beautiful and healing words, Lyli. Thank you, friend.
Such a helpful post, Lyli, for there are many who are hurting today. May we remember to give Him all the pieces so that our healing is complete. Thank you for every word of this post! xo
Lyli, this is so beautifully healing and inspiring. Thank you for sharing your heart and for the encouraging words pointing us to the Great Healer. Blessings to you!
Thanks for your wonderful words about healing our hearts. We all have need of that at one time or another! I like your analogy comparing our “hearts” (emotional), to the physical/medical realm. It’s kind of like a parable.
Thank-you also for allowing me to join in your link-up! I am a relatively new blogger, so this is an opportunity to get to know some other fine blogging ladies out there!
Looking forward to joining with you again soon!
Oh, Lyli, if I could, I would jump right through this computer screen and give you a big hug. One, just because you are so precious and words made my heart break as you described your pain. But two, because you share such hope for healing here! Life hurts. Badly. But we can heal. And God is our healer!
What a blessing this was for me today!
Hugs,
Lori
