Picture Yourself

In order to make your prayer more profitable, it would be well from the beginning to picture yourself as a poor, naked, miserable wretch, perishing of hunger, who knows but one man of whom he can ask or hope for help; or as a sick person, covered with sores and ready to die unless some pitiful physician will take him in hand and heal him.  These are true pictures of our condition before God.  Your soul is more bare of heavenly treasure than a poor beggar is of earthy possessions…your soul is infinitely more sin-sick than that sore stricken patient, and God alone can heal you.

Francis Fenelon, as quoted in Soul Keeping by John Ortberg (p. 87)

Something to think about…

  1. wow… that quote left me speechless. I don’t know what to say but I am thankful for His mercy and grace in this place where I stand, needing the cleansing that only His blood can give!
    Blessings,

  2. What a contrast between our soul before the work of Christ in our heart and after. I was wondering this morning what the heart of a terrorist must look like. Without Christ my heart would be capable of evil, too. Thank you for hosting this party. You’re a jewel! ~Pamela

  3. I’m trying hard to learn to see myself as God sees me – I’ve been trying to raise my eyes to his and see me through them – because I can do a pretty good job of tearing myself down – and sometimes the world joins the bandwagon. It’s true, though, that until we see our own brokenness, how can we want to see ourselves as God sees us!

  4. I am remembering when Jesus said that only sick people need a doctor – and that He came for those who knew they were *sick* – filled with the ravages of sin.

Yes, Lord, I am one of those. I need You so.

    GOD BLESS.
