Follow the Pattern

Dear brothers and sisters, pattern your lives after mine, and learn from those who follow our example.

Philippians 3:17, NLT

She clothed me in garments stitched with love.

Abuela was a gifted seamstress.  As a child, I remember standing still in her shadow often as she walked around me pinning a pattern together to establish the form of a beautiful dress.

As we laid her to rest this week, I realize how her kindness and grace tailored my life.

She became a living pattern —  a devoted wife, a loving mother, a faithful congregant, a doting grandmother, and a hospitable friend.  Her even stitches threaded through our lives hemming us in and creating beauty.

Seams sewn with strands of strong faith never completely unravel.

I will forever follow her pattern.

  1. Lyli, I truly am sorry for your loss. Abuela has left your a lasting legacy and memories which will live on in your heart and life now. A beautiful tribute. May God bring you comfort. Much love to you. xo

  2. What a tribute to an influential and loving woman. May we all invest in the lives of others as she did, and may you find the comfort of our loving God as you walk through this time of grief.

  3. I’m so sorry that you lost your grandmother, Lyli. How wonderful that she left you such a wonderful legacy. Lela, I like that! (Maybe I’ll have my grandkids call me that when I ever have them…) My nieces and nephews called our Abuelita Ofe Abue.

  4. Aw, so sad to lose a grandparent at any age. 🙁 Praying for you, Lyli, as you grieve your abuela. She sounds like she was such a giving woman. And talented too!

  5. This sat our church begins a new mentoring program – cups and cakes – (bring your cup and eat a cupcake and learn from someone whose gone before you) – you were mentored w/o a program and now you’ve passed it on to us. Thanks, Lyli – have a lovely day of inseamed faith.
