How to Win the War during an Angry Election Year
Facebook is a scary place during an election year. The Trump-ers are blowing their horns loud and proud. They are on the winning team, and they think they know best. But, the Biden Bunch are not going quietly either. They’ve adopted the hashtag #ThePresidentIsACryBaby, and they are taking their anger and unhappiness to the streets in protest.
I think I’ve unfollowed like a million angry politically loud friends on social media this year. I just can’t handle the noise.
Why can’t we just learn to listen to one another and realize that no one in the White House is going to make things right?
We live in a broken world, and only God can redeem and restore us. He alone can uproot the seeds of sin and death that our willful, disobedient choices have planted. Only God can unite and heal what seems completely broken and divided.
As I look toward the next four years, what exactly is my role as a Daughter of the King in the midst of a disruptive, captive land? My job is not to prove how right I am. I am not here to be the Holy Spirit and convict the hearts of men. I am here to be His hands and feet. I am here to share the Good News that only Jesus sets us truly free and leads us with integrity.
Have you gotten quiet and withdrawn from the world because of all the noise and arguing? Don’t let the enemy silence you now. You need to wage war — but not like the world with a loud angry voice. We fight with spiritual weapons that overcome evil and point people to salvation.
4 Ways to Win the War during an Angry Election Year
Be a Reconciliation Ambassador
Don’t pick sides. Look for common ground and stay open to Spirit-led opportunities for conversation. Your job is to help build bridges between this lost disenfranchised world and our Savior. That’s the only platform that really makes a difference.
- “For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. And He died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves but for him who died for them and was raised again. So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view…. He has committed to us the message of reconciliation. We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making His appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God” (II Corinthians 5:14-21)
Be a Wise Peacemaker
People feel lied to and lost, but you know the Leader who really sets men free and leads to lasting peace. Point the confused and shaken toward the solid Truth found in God’s unchanging Word. Let them know that there is more at stake here than the next four years — their eternal destiny hands in the balance. If They place their full confidence in the real most powerful man in the world, they will never be disappointed.
- “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such ‘wisdom’ does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness” (James 3:13-18).
Be a Loving Servant
Many people are overwhelmed by fear, doubt, loneliness, and anger right now. How will you come alongside them to let them know God loves them? A simple act of kindness can crack open a hard heart to God”s redemption. Ask God to help you find simple ways to use your gifts to bless those who are hurting. Help meet needs and sow seeds of love to break up the fallow ground of bitter hearts.
- “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love. For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other” (Galatians 5:13-15).
Be a light in a dark place
Shine brightly. People will note your confident trust in an eternal God who keeps His promises during dark times. Your life testifies that God is alive and at work even though we are all walking through a very hard season. Live like you know greater things are yet to come.
- “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:14-16)

There is work to be done, my sisters. We aren’t here to prove we are right. We are here to point to Jesus. He will make things right.
I especially love the thoughts of looking for common ground and building bridges. By doing so, our light will shine even brighter in a society that is doing the opposite.
Yes. I am asking God to help me have eyes to see how to be a conduit for His grace, rather than getting caught up in all the grumbling and discontent.
Our sad world will not be won to Christ by our rage. Our Christ-focused hope and joy is what sets us apart from the despair around us.
Yes, agreed. I am actually studying the book of James with my small group, and last week we talked about that verse in James 1 which says be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger. Anger never produces righteousness.
This post is so needed. I almost quit facebook every presidential election year.
Hugs, friend. I just happily unfollow.
Sometimes I think Christians are part of the problem since we are so vested in our partisan politics. We have become brainwashed like everyone else and spout the same nonsense under the cloak of Christianity. If we weren’t so intertwined, we’d be able to step back and come at this differently. How each person votes is no one’s business; we wouldn’t try to influence an outcome like our lives depended on it because God controls everything regardless of who is in the White House. We wouldn’t get caught up and we’d have a peace that surpasses the current environment. I personally have spent more time in the Word, praying so that I’m not so easily influenced by these election shenanigans. The things of this world have become strangely dim….in the Light of His Glory and grace.
Friend, I am with you. We are getting all bent out of shape about an election, yet we aren’t losing any sleep about our neighbor who needs Jesus. If we got half as up in arms about the gospel as we do about who we vote for, we might see revival.
great point!!
Amen, sister!!!! We need more voices saying this…and more warm hearts following it!
We’re on the same path this week in our posts, Lyli. We don’t need any more fuel to this bonfire of anxiety and unrest in our country. Instead we need lights and kindness and love and Jesus. Thanks for nudging us to shine brightly!
I don’t know why it always surprises me that people can be so ugly to each other. I know the truth that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, yet I’m still shocked that people act sinful! Social media seems to be the place that has brought out the worst. God help us to look to Him, not politics, for our salvation.
