3 Truths You Need to Remember When You Cannot Fall Asleep
For a solid year, I kept a list of verses on my nightstand that I would read out loud to myself before I turned off the light. I was carrying so many worries that my mind refused to slow down. How do you quiet your brain when you cannot fall asleep? This is a daily battle in my life.
Do you struggle to turn off your brain and rest? Maybe like me when you lay your head down on the pillow, your fears become animated and start to play like a horror movie in your semi-conscious mind. You picture every terrible thing that can happen in full color and end up shaking under the covers.
My husband lays his head down and starts snoring away peacefully within 5 minutes. I hear the rise and fall of his breath, and frankly I am jealous of his slumber. Some nights, I can lay in bed for hours wresting with the “what ifs” and “if onlys.”
- What if my loved one never turns their life around?
- If only we could all get along? Why are people so mean to each other?
- How am I going to make it through this mess in one piece?
- Where will I find what I need to fix my problem?
- Why is God allowing this to happen to me right now?
- Will anything ever change?
I will toss and turn in bed all night long trying to fix my real problems and find a solution to avoid the catastrophic future I am sure is coming. How about you, friend? Do you struggle to shut off the noise in the night hours?
The God of peace has granted us the gift of sweet sleep, but the enemy of our souls does everything he can to disrupt our rest and restoration. I’m learning that I need to purposefully resolve to fix my thoughts on what is true and silence the voice of fear.
When You Cannot Fall Asleep Remember:
God stays on watch and never sleeps.
You can close your eyes because God always has His eyes on you. Day and night, you have a Deliverer.
- “He will guard and guide me, never letting me stumble or fall. God is my keeper; He will never forget nor ignore me. / He will never slumber nor sleep; He is the Guardian-God for his people, Israel. / Jehovah Himself will watch over you; He’s always at your side to shelter you safely in His presence. / He’s protecting you from all danger both day and night.” (Psalm 121:3-6, TPT)
The enemy cannot harm your sweet sleep because God is on your side.
You have a loving Heavenly Father who sits at your bedside and sings over you. The Lord wants you to rest free from cares and distractions and awaken refreshed.
- “When you lie down, you will not be afraid; when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet. / Have no fear of sudden disaster or of the ruin that overtakes the wicked, / for the Lord will be at your side and will keep your foot from being snared.” (Proverbs 3:24-26, AMP)
God works to bring blessing while you sleep.
Words We don’t need to burn the midnight oil because God is always at work. Our Lord has promised to provide everything we need, and He will forever surround us with HIs favor.
- “It is vain for you to rise up early, to take rest late, to eat the bread of anxious toil—for He gives blessings to His beloved in sleep.” (Psalm 127:2, AMPC)

When we remind ourselves that God is in control, we can surrender our fear and doubt and worry to His care. We experience peaceful slumber as we run to Him and recognize He is Lord over every concern.
Tonight, we can lay in bed and say, “Lord, I know that this situation is impossibly hard, but I believe nothing is impossible for You.” We can close our eyes and pray, “Father, I don’t see how things will change, but I know You work all things together for my good and Your glory.” In the quiet, we can choose to worship rather than worry. God will refresh our hearts and minds as we place our confident trust in Him.
When you cannot fall asleep, focus on God’s faithfulness and find rest.

I’ve used many of these same truths. I try to turn the concerns into prayer.
Yay!
I’ve used these many a night as I lay listening to my husband sleep well 🙂
xo
I see you have a well-rested husband, too! Love you, friend 🙂
This is me right now. I have started praying for God to give me complete rest of body, mind and spirit. And I just repeat. I am praying for you in this.
Yes, prayer is key. Big hugs, friend
I use one of the verses you referenced. Ps. 4:8 and it is a comfort to me. Then, if I’m having a rough time getting settle I go to Philippians 4:4-8.
That’s a great passage to meditate on. I love Philippians as a whole!
