31 Days to Fruitful Living — Day 6
At first, it doesn’t seem to make sense. How could cutting back a fruit tree actually help it to grow stronger? Apparently, lopping off dormant and diseased buds and branches helps train the tree to be structurally sound. Those branches are competing for attention with the healthy parts of the tree and are literally sucking away its life.
As I look back over my spiritual journey, I see where God decided to prune some unhealthy habits out of my life. I needed to let go of those things that were hindering my growth and competing for my attention so that I could be more fruitilicious.
Pruning is painful. I don’t like pain. But, I need to remember that the Master Gardener has a plan. I need to surrender to the shears and trust His vision.
“I am the Real Vine and my Father is the Farmer.
He cuts off every branch of me
that doesn’t bear grapes.
And every branch that is grape-bearing
He prunes back so it will bear even more.
You are already pruned back
by the message I have spoken.”
John 15:1-3, MSG

Q4U: Do you find pruning to be painful? How has God’s pruning lead to greater growth in your life?
Dear Lyli
Pruning is painful and yet wonderful at the same time. I have learned that the more I suffer, the deeper I draw into the Life of Jesus and the more of His love, joy and peace I experience.

More of Him! Yes!!! Thanks for sharing that sweet testimony, Mia. 🙂
I’ve found that for me, the pain of pruning comes in my resistance to Him. When I surrender and become open to His hand, the pruning becomes a welcome restoration. That is what creates the renewing of my mind and heart, and the desire to do His will.
I love that word — “restoration.” I am so thankful that our God restores. So glad you stopped by today, Susan! 🙂
I love this scripture! I used to buck and whine and complain anytime the Lord pruned my spirit. I didn’t realize then that he was ridding me of the negativity that was drowning out the real me. I still don’t like change and surprises, but if they happen I instantly turn to our Lord. Thank you for this lovely reminder!
I am a status quo kind of girl, too, Carrie. Change is hard for me. He is so patient with stubborn me. For this, I am very thankful.
